What is the difference between…?
- Chosen by Voters LOL…me and my husband argue about this often actually (he is mixed race and we just had a daughter so he is now really just understanding the difference of race, background, ethnicity, and culture). Okay race is categorization of humans into groups on the basis of various sets of heritable characteristics; skin color, facial features, and hair texture. This is a generalization…like what you would see on a job or college scholarship application…black, white, hispanic. Race has nothing to do with "where" you or your ancestors come from. You can be from Nigeria and be white, just as you can come from England and be black. Ethnicity is marked by the recognition of common cultural, linguistic, religious, behavioural in contrast to other groups. This is moreso "where" your ancestors came from. This is when you would say I'm of African and German descent or in my husbands case Mexican and Belizean descent. Ethnicity doesn't necessarily affect your race. A good example would be boxer Lennox Lewis. His race is obviously a black man but he is from Britain not Africa. It gets a little confusing because people have migrated all over and although your ancestors may have come from one place, further research may show THEIR ancestors came from somewhere else…which would explain how you could be black from Britain or white from Sierra Leone :-\ Your background is more of a recent explanation of where you come from…like the city, state, neighborhood, financial status, schooling and so on. Your background more explains your personal goals and beliefs you've developed because of the like you led. Your culture is the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group. Culture can come from your ethnicity, race, or background. For example the religion you choose. Many hispanic Americans are Catholic thats part of that races culture or if you were raised in a Muslim family the women would cover all of their body…that would be your background. Its a bit confusing but it all adds up to what makes a person who they are. 2 years ago 100% 1 Vote
